HimAid

HimAid

HimAid refers to Himalayan aid. The idea was to aid locating trekkers with a gps activated mesh LoRA network.

Nepal is a mountainous country, covered by the highest mountains in the world. This has captured the interest to many to climb those mountains. But most climbers are not equipped with safety device with them to carry. Doing some research made me understand that people do carry satellite phones with them. Nepal is also prone to earthquakes and climbing a mountain always comes with a risk.

I came up with this idea because what if the people are already in a difficult situation and unable to use their phone. The idea was to create a always connected mesh LoRA network, that allowed track the position of each climber and bring on quick recovery if needed.

The project constituted these elements.

  1. Raspberry Pi 3
  2. Raspberry Pi Pico
  3. GPS sensors
  4. LoRA (semtech 1172) modules

The raspberry pi was used as a server to get the information from multiple lora devices. Pi Pico with micropython was used to develop the tracking device.

The server would host a web application that display the map and location of each tracker within the map.
